New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: A village in Karnataka's countryside in Tumkur (Tumakuru) district, about 127 km from capital Bengaluru on Tuesday reported two goat herders testing positive for coronavirus, following which around 50 goats and sheeps were quarantined. The development followed after several goats of COVID-positive goat herders died in what is being reported as 'unnatural deaths'.

According to a Times of India report, the Godekere village in Chikkanayakanahalli Taluka, from where the incident is reported to have happened has 300 houses with a little over 1,000 population. The officials had to counter substantial resistance from the villagers, as they thought their goats were going to be killed for the fear of infection by the authorities.

The swab samples of all quarantined animals have been sent over to the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals in Bengaluru, which has forwarded the samples to a laboratory in Bhopal. Officials, however, according to media reports, are suspecting the animals to be suffering from PPR disease (Peste de petis Ruminants), also known as goat plague and Mycoplasma infection, although possibility of COVID infection too cannot be ruled out.

The state, although, continues to have the lowest deaths per million, but in the past week, the total confirmed case count has breached the mark of 15,000 with over 250 fatalities due to COVID infection.
