It is sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as well as other organisations in the field of healthcare. On this day, the WHO organises local, regional and international events on the day relate to a particular theme. This day is recognised by various governmental and non-governmental organisations around the world with interest in public health, who also organises activities and highlight their support.
History and Significance
The first World Health Assembly took place by the WHO in 1948. It decided to celebrate April 7 as World Health Day with effect from the year 1950. On World Health Day, the health authorities from numerous countries take part in celebrations and pledges to support on numerous health issues worldwide
It is said that good health helps us work better. It is necessary to spread awareness among people and give knowledge about health. World Health Day is an opportunity to draw the attention of masses and towards the importance of global health.
World Health Day is one of the global health campaigns by the WHO, along with World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World AIDS Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Hepatitis Day and World Tuberculosis Day.
Theme
The Theme of this year's World Health Day is to support nurses and midwives. In a statement, the WHO said, "This will be vital if we are to achieve national and global targets related to universal health coverage, maternal and child health, infectious and non-communicable diseases including mental health, emergency preparedness and response, patient safety and the delivery of integrated, people-centered care, amongst others," as quoted by who.int
This comes amid a global health emergency due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak that has affected more than 190 countries across the world, including India.
