As several countries lineup with proposals to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that it will first consider India as a venue for the world's most premier T20 tournament. The IPL 2020 was originally scheduled to start on April 29 but postponed indefinitely in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
However, with the situation improving, the BCCI is considering a curtailed season of IPL on popular demand from fans, cricketers and frenchises.
"We've to consider India first and then think of overseas. They have sent these proposals in case we want to organise it there. We will discuss it in the next IPL governing council meeting where we will take a call," BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters.
His remarks came after several countries, including Sri Lanka, the UAE and most recently New Zealand, reportedly sent the BCCI proposals to host the IPL 2020.
In its 12-year history, IPL has been held outside India only twice - in 2009 and 2014. While the 2009 season was held in South Africa due to the general elections, the first leg of IPL 2014 was held in the UAE due to the same reason.
