New Delhi | Jagran Sports Desk: The suspense over the fate of T20 World Cup is likely to end this week as the International Cricket Council (ICC) may finally decide to officially announce the postponement of the event that was scheduled to take place in Australia due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, according to a media report.
According to a report by Australia's 'The Daily Telegraph', the ICC will likely make an announcement in this week regarding the T20 World Cup. The report also claims that the Australian cricket team, which started outdoor training, has been told to get ready for a white-ball series against England in September.
"Cricket's World Cup is set to be officially postponed this week as Australia's players are told to start preparing for comeback battle against England," The Daily Telegraph reported.
The ICC World Cup T20 was set to be held in October and November. However, The Daily Telegraph report claimed that the ICC will likely postponed the event due to the coronavirus pandemic, adding that Indian Premier League 2020 (IPL) is set to be slotted during the October-November window.
Meanwhile, some media reports suggest that the ICC might shift the World Cup T20 to 2022."We are expecting three options from the ICC Events Committee. First option is having World T20 as per schedule with 14-day quarantine with crowd being allowed. The back-up for this option could be tournament in-front of empty stadium. The third option could be shifting the tournament to 2022," news agency PTI had quoted a source as saying.
The Daily Telegraph report further claimed that if Cricket Australia decides on allowing its players to play in the IPL, "..the ideal scenario would be they could go straight from the England limited overs series to wherever the T20 league is held in Middle East or Asia".
According to the report, Cricket Australia will announce about England's tour later as "Australia's pace bowlers are building up their workloads for a return to play in September and players have been told to start preparing for another date with the Old Enemy".
"Training for return to action in September is strongest indication yet that Aaron Finch's troops will head to the UK for a limited overs tour in bio-security bubble .....," The Daily Telegraph reported.
